Admissions for studying medicine abroad - Medical university admissions in Europe

Admission to medical universities or medical studies, faculty of Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy, etc. is by application file competition and/or entrance examinations and interviews depending on universities and university program (undergraduate and graduate).

Depending on admission requirements of each Medical school, Medical University may seek students with appropriate academic qualifications (basic in Biology, Chemistry and/ or Physics), a good command of English, French or other language of instruction, high motivation to study Medicine and eventually experience in medical field. Some universities may require additional documents such us recommendation letter, personal statement, etc.

To apply to medical University, the following general requirements must meet by all applicants: High school diploma (certificate), Medical requirements (good health condition for medical studies and profession), Self finance, identification documents (passport), and birth certificate and language requirements.

Medical Universities offers a range of educational qualifications, including Preparatory (foundation) course, Bachelor's degrees, Master's degrees, PhDs and post-academic programs (Residency). Bachelor degree includes preclinical and clinical studies depending on the field of study.

Foreign citizens from the European Union, the European Economic Area and Swiss Confederation can apply for admission to studies (Bachelor, Master, or PhD or Doctorate degree) programs and are entitled to study under the same conditions as Romanian citizens (including tuition fees and scholarships).


Medical University admission requirements

Medical University admission requirements: Basic Medical University admission requirements in Europe and beyond are high school diploma; good grad in Biology, Chemistry, and or Physics; good commend of language of instruction, sufficient self-finances or sponsor and personal identification documents.

High school diploma or Secondary School Leaving Certificate or equal as GCE/or IGCE A-level certificates or International Baccalaureate (IB) and EB diplomas qualifying for admission to a university or medical school in a home country.

Good grade in subject relevant to medical field: Biology, Chemistry, and or Physics, Mathematics documented by school leaving certificates/diplomas etc. Even if the requirements vary from different Medical Universities, the minimum grade must be at least above the average in 2 subjects depending also on origin of high school certificate (High education system of each country).
Some medical universities verify also the prospective student during interview (for instance by Skype) or by entrance examination.

Graduate diploma

4 year medical program: some medical universities in Europe offer 4 year medical programs for perspective students who completed the pre-medical programs and obtained at least the BSc degree. The program consists of 2 years ( 4 semesters) of pre-clinical, basic subjects: anatomy, biochemistry, biophysics, physiology, histology and cell biology, microbiology, pathomorphology, pharmacology and others and 2 years (4 semesters) of clinical subjects such as: internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, radiology, family medicine, neurology, oncology & palliative care, otolaryngology, ophthalmology, infectious diseases and others.

The 4 year program for graduate premedical students is a full time study program, tailor-made for those university students from USA, Canada, Taiwan, UK or American universities in other countries, who completed the pre-medical programs and obtained at least the BSc degree.

5 or 6 year medical program: Most of full Medical program of 5 or 6 years (Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy etc.) consider previous medical or paramedical university studies.

University Academic Records for medical study application
Being transfer university student or not, some universities can consider the medical candidate previous academic records if he has already studying to medical university but has not yet been graduate. Therefore, it is highly recommended to those applying to universities considering university academic record, to include official academic record documentation in the application file.

Language of instruction requirement: English, French, etc.
The common languages for International medical students are English and French. Each country has medical universities in national language. The prospective Medical Student must present an English or French international recognized certificate (competency written and spoken confirmed) if the secondary education was not conducted in English/French or the language of instruction is not his official language.
Depending on each University, most require English certificate are: CAE, CPE, TOEFL PBT (min 500 points), IELTS (min 6.0 points) if the secondary education was not conducted in English.
The command of English of candidates who cannot present any of above certificates can be assessed during the entrance exam (if any) all after his arrival at university and seat for English test. Some University organize medical English test for all candidate students.

Medical candidate student Personal statement
Some medical schools take personal statements more seriously than others. Other universities, including use them more informally to get an impression of a candidate's suitability. Therefore, the prospective candidate must know if he must prepare o or not his personal statements for the university he is interested in.
Personal statement is one way to show to admission committee that the student is committed medical field through his work experience. He must use it to prove that he has a realistic view of the profession. With the goal to be admitted, the student must be honest and explain how he came to love medicine, and why he is able to cope with a course that is tough, demanding and competitive.

Personal experience in Medical field
Some medical schools may consider Personal experience or achievements in Medical field.
For those medical Universities considering student achievements such us working experience in hospital or any other medical center, voluntary experience in humanitarian or medical field (Hospital, Red Cross, orphan center, geriatric center, etc.) etc., candidate students are required to submit along with other required documents, certificate proving such experiences.
This document must be official copy (certified according the requirement of each University) are often highly appreciated by some Universities in East Europe.

Letter of Recommendation
Letter of recommendation from for example one of the former professors is appreciated by some medical university admission committee.

Transfer student admission

Students who have accomplished part of medical study in other university who wont to apply to new medical university as transfer students can have their previous studies (University credits )recognized by new university. Even if the university credit transfer (medical student transfer) can slightly vary with universities, they include details on academic studies in addition to first year student application requirements.

Medical student transfer admission requirements:

  • Proof of education/ schooling evidence with exams results.
  • Curriculum.
  • The syllabus of each subject for which the equivalence is requested.
  • Official explanatory note on the grading system applied in the school where the applicant studied, and the correlation of the ECTS grading system.
  • Written request stating the academic year for which the equivalence is requested, and the applicant's contact details (e-mail, telephone number, country, home address, etc.).
  • Romanian language certificate for graduate students of the 3rd year of study and 4th year of study.
  • Letter of motivation.

The transcript must be legalized, translated into Bulgarian and certified in accordance with the provisions of the international treaties of the Republic of Bulgaria with the host/issuing state. In the absence of such provisions – the general procedure for legalization, translation and certification of documents and other papers is applicable.
 

Admission entrance examination to Medical Study

Admission or entrance examination Medical studies depend on Universities:
