Pavol Jozef Šafárik University was founded in 1959 as the second classical University in Slovakia based on the legacy of the historic UNIVERSITAS CASSOVIENSIS, having continuously operated in Kosice from 1657until 1921.
The university is named after Pavol Jozef Safarik, a Slovak poet, historian, and university professor, and its establishment meant a significant asset to the development of education and scientific research activities in Kosice.
The current structure of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University includes five faculties (Faculty of Medicine from 1949, Faculty of Natural Science from 1963, Faculty of Law from 1073, Faculty of Public Administration from 1998 and Faculty of Arts from 2007).
